Hello everyone! My name is Caroline Pugh, and I am from Catonsville, MD. I am a freshman Biology and German double major in the Integrated Life Sciences program at UMD. This will be my first Alternative Breaks trip, and I am incredibly excited to learn more about turtle conservation and the ramifications that human activity has on local, regional, and global ecosystems. As a part of the Green Terp sustainability movement on campus, I have become more aware of the little choices that each person can make in order to make a difference, such as using reusable cutlery and straws, as well as being more aware about recycling and reusing methods. However it is also important to take a broader perspective into the actions that can be taken on a larger scale. If you are interested in making a difference, not only for the turtles, but also for the other wildlife (humans included) that inhabit this planet, call your representatives, volunteer with animals, protest, sign petitions, write letters, and learn as much as you can about the cause you are supporting. I can't wait to meet the turtles and the amazing volunteers at the Karen Beasley Center, as well as to get closer to the other participants on this trip. :)
